Den 25. februar 1945 blev HAL HX224 skudt ned over Skagerrak omkring her. Flyvehistorisk Tidsskrift skriver:
"25/26 februar 1945 (kl 21.25). Skagerrak, ca. 30 km N for Hirtshals. Halifax GRII, HX224 (BY-P).
58 Squadron, 18 Group, Coastal Command, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. (Anti shipping patrol i Skagerrak). 7 MIA og 1 MA (Bispebjerg).

L-Lucy JP172 sporede 9 skibe i Skagerrak og foretog et perfekt angreb. Et handelsskib blev sat i brand og kort efter eksploderede det. P-Peter HX224 lettede kl. 16.25,
og 5 timer senere blev flyet skudt ned af en tysk Major i en Ju88 fra I/NJG 3. Den 14. november 1979 fik en hummerfisker vragrester i sit garn på 39 favne vand på positionen 57°56N - 10°40 Ø.

Fundet bestod af aluminiumsdele, maskingeværammunition, en knap, en lighter, et ur samt diverse skeletdele. Uret bar inskriptionen »Hugh McLean« og var givet
hans 21 års fødselsdag i 1936. Det viste sig at være HX224's agterskytte, F/O Hugh James Alexander McLean, fra Australien.

Den 10. juni 1980 blev F/O McLean begravet fra St. Alban´s Church i København. Han ligger på Bispebjerg Kirkegård. (Kilde: FAF)

On 25 February 1945 HAL HX224 was shot down over the Skagerrak about here. (Danish) Aviation Historical Review writes:
"25/26 February 1945 (21.25 hours). The Skagerrak, app. 30 km N of Hirtshals. Halifax GRII, HX224 (BY-P).
58 Squadron, 18 Group, Coastal Command, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. (Anti shipping patrol in the Skagerrak). 7 MIA and 1 MA (Bispebjerg).

L-Lucy JP172 found 9 ships in the Skagerrak and carried out a perfect attack. A merchant ship caught fire and exploded shortly after. P-Peter HX224 took off at 16.25 hours and 5 hours later it was shot down by a German Major in a Ju88 from I/NJG 3. On 14 November 1979 a fisherman catching lobsters got pieces of wreckage in his net at a depth of 39 fathoms on the position 57°56N - 10°40 E.

The find consisted of aluminium parts, machine gun ammunition, a button, a lighter, a watch and human bones. The watch had the inscription »Hugh McLean« and it
was given to him on his 21st birthday in 1936. It appeared to be the Rear Gunner of HX224,
F/O Hugh James Alexander McLean of Australia. - " (FT 89-73-42)
On 10 June 1980 F/O McLean was buried from St. Alban´s Church in Copenhagen. He rests in Bispebjerg Cemetery. (Source: FAF)
