De 4 andre Mustangs nedskød eller beskadigede
flere andre tyske fly. F/Sgt Rowland Williams i MUS FZ110
her.
(Kilde: FT 89-72-35)

F/O Germain from
MUS FX995 was buried on 17 May 1944, and the very same day Aalborg Air
Station (Aalborg West, now Aalborg Airport)
here
was again attacked by 8 Mustangs.
The formation took off from
RAF Coltishall at
09:05 and had flown the 1300 km tour between Coltishall
here
and
Aalborg
here
in about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The weather over Aalborg was fine, and
quite a few German planes were in the air on training missions. The Germans were
totally taken by surprise, when the eight Mustangs suddenly attacked. South of
Aalborg 4
Mustangs threw themselves on 2 formations of
Ju88. They shot down 4
Ju88. During the attack F/Lt Richard Barrett in MUS FX993
lost contact with the 3 others, but east of Aalborg he succeeded in shooting down a
HE177. In the meantime
more FW190s had taken off from
Rørdal Air Station
(Aalborg Ost,
here, more here) and
one of them targeted Barrett´s Mustang. After a short fight at a low altitude
Barrett crashed, burning, into the Limfjorden about
here and perished. He was buried in Frederikshavn Cemetery on 20 or 24 May
1944. (Source: FT 89-71-34)
The 4 other Mustangs shot down or damaged several
other German planes. F/Sgt Rowland Williams in MUS FZ110
damaged a Ju W 34 east
of Rødslet and shot down another Ju W 34 to end with the shooting down of a Ju88
at Stagsted. Williams´ plane was damaged during the last attack, and he had to
make a forced landing
here. He came to Sweden after an eventful evasion through North Jutland. On
1 July he flew from Stockholm to England in a
Mosquito, and
after a leave where he was awarded the DFM, he again joined the
65 Squadron, which in
the meantime had been transferred to France. (Source: FT 89-72-35) |
