Appeal for a memorial to 69 Allied airmen In Danish Updated: 23 FEB 2016
On 5 May
1990 a memorial to 69 Allied airmen
was unveiled in the Rebild Hills on the initiative of Colonel
Helge W. Gram. More details in his book.
In 1988 5 prominent
figures from the
Danish resistance movement and the leading historian of underground
warfare in Denmark signed this appeal,
which was
to prove successful,
here taken from Helge W. Gram: Shot down over Denmark 1940-1945:
A memorial to the Allied airmen who lost their lives in air operations to arm the Danish Resistance
For more than forty years after the end of World War
II the people of Denmark have been free to live their lives in conditions of
peace and in the hope that
stability in Europe will result in detente and
international understanding.
Throughout this long period, both those who took an active part in the fight for freedom
and those who
supported it have
harboured a heartfelt wish to offer
help where participation had caused loss of
lives or health; and further, to keep alive the remembrance of the struggles and
efforts involved in restoring
freedom to Denmark.
Today there are many manifestations of the wish to commemorate this period of our history:
The
Memorial Park in Ryvangen, the
Museum of Danish Resistance in Copenhagen, and many important
books about the years of the
Occupation
ensure that all aspects of the Resistance, its background and results
will remain firmly anchored in the consciousness of Denmark today and of
future
generations.
All over the country memorials and monuments testify to sacrifices and deeds of valour. Much has been preserved for posterity. Much remains to be done.
The contribution of the Allied airmen towards arming the Danish Resistance has not yet been honoured by a memorial which expresses the respect and gratitude of the Danish people,
We hereby express our whole-hearted support for this
idea and urge you to support the erection of a memorial to be unveiled on 5 May 1990,
the 45th
anniversary of the Liberation of Danmark, in commemoration of the 69
Allied airmen who lost their lives bringing arms to the Danish Resistance.
