Den 24. august 1943 blev HAL DK261 under returflyvning fra Berlin skudt ned af en tysk natjager ved Mandø. Flyet styrtede ned vest for øen, måske omkring her. Se p211MACR med mange detaljer.

2 omkomne besætningsmedlemmer fra dette fly, F. V. Messenger og M. W. Stevenson, blev begravet i Esbjerg den 2. september 1943.

Det lykkedes piloten, S/Ldr Roy McLernon via Esbjerg og Århus at nå Sverige den 16. september 1943.

On 24 August 1943 HAL DK261 on the return flight from Berlin HAL DK261 was shot down by a German night fighter at Mandø. The plane crashed west of the island of Mandø, maybe about here.
