2,937 britiske og allierede flyvere fløj for RAF Fighter Command i perioden 10. juli til 31. oktober 1940. 544 af dem mistede livet
under Slaget om England. Se Leif Olsens meget udførlige Luftkrigen over England 1940-41.
Tyskerne lærte snart, at bombemaskiner skulle have jagereskorte. RAF fandt ud af det under
angrebet på Aalborg West 13. august 1940.
Spitfires havde meget kort rækkevidde. Spitfire Mk. XI blev skudt ned over Danmark - 4 dage efter krigens afslutning i Danmark!

The Germans soon learned that bombers had to have fighter escort. The RAF learned that during the attack on Aalborg West on 13 August, 1940.

Spitfires had a very short range. Spitfire Mk. XI was shot down over Denmark - 4 days after the end of the war in Denmark!
