A 4-engined English bomber with 7 men shot
down in Sdr. Stenderup
During the latest air raid warning on Sunday evening a big 4-engined
English bomber with a crew of 7 men was shot down
near Mørkholtgaard east of Sdr. Stenderup,
apparently hit during an aerial battle. Farmer Juhl, who lives at
Mørkholtgaard, was walking on the nearby road, when he heard
the big plane rushing down towards him with all four engines at
full blast. He was at a loss to which side he could jump for
cover - and next moment the big plane had crashed
into the ground. He saw a spurt of flame bursting at the crash.
Apparently
the crew had managed to bail out. The first member of the crew to be
found was a Squadron Leader, who turned up in Sdr. Stenderup
Skovridergaard ("forester's farm") from where he was
fetched shortly after.
He was at the start of his twenties
and had only got a small scratch. Later three more
of the crew have been found alive, one of them near Middelfart, wounded.
On Sunday night at about 1 p.m. the
Falck Fire
Brigade was called to the crashed plane, as the fire had
spread to the fuel which had run out of the fuel tanks
and had drenched the soil. The fire might have spread to the forest, and
Falck had considerable difficulty extinguishing the fire.
Also bombs near Haderslev
This is another story.
