Film 2 min. 15 sec. by Jeppe Olsen (also the narrator) sent on 14 NOV 2011 The mystery is solved | |
Anchor | The amateur historian Anders Straarup from Randers has solved one of the mysteries from World War II. He has identified a plane that disappeared and the crew on board. |
YouTube Halifax / Shelves | From ceiling to floor reading about World War II, at the computer Anders Straarup. |
Hand | AS: "I have always been very interested in the Occupation of Denmark and World War II." |
YouTube Halifax | On a big bombing raid in 1943 4
planes disappeared over Denmark. "1 Halifax and 3 Lancasters disappeared
without trace." One of these planes crashed at Halskov near Korsør. "Well, this plane must be one of these four planes. It can be nothing else." |
Book: Fallen Allied Airmen | Anders Straarup decided to find out what was shot down. |
Anders Straarup (AS) | "Others have worked with this case, but I provided the evidence from scratch and carried it to a succesful conclusion." |
YouTube Halifax | It was an English Halifax bomber like this. Typically there were 7 crew members in a Halifax, but this plane was different. |
AS hole, Bjarne Johansen | "There were 8." Due to
the explosion hardly any human remains were left, so that is why there are 7
anonymous graves with the same date on Bispebjerg Cemetery in Copenhagen. |
Engine - crash site | Anders Straarup checked and compared registers, reports and pieces of wreckage and finally concluded that the plane that was shot down was Halifax DT628. |
AS Headlines on the
screen (from Korsør Posten) |
"It has taken 4 years so
far."
Anders Straarup's investigations have meant that the bereaved families in
England now know for certain what happened to their loved ones. |
Newspaper cutting, Ronald H. Glover |
GSG: "Unbelievable. Unbelievable."
Ronald Glover was in the plane when it crashed. His brother George Stanley Glover
also served in the Royal Air Force, when it happened. "I got notification from my mother who had received a telegramme saying that my brother was missing. Now we never found anything out about that. No one could come up with anything." |
Halifax | But 68 years were to pass till
he knew for certain. GSG: "I am very pleased to know, but there is some part of the information I got that is absolutely terrible - disastrous to hear what happened." |
AS | "It also took Anders Straarup 4
years to find a solution of the mystery. "It takes some time. I would never
have had time for this, if I had not retired from my job as a schoolteacher." |
Bispebjerg | 68 years later 8 graves in Bispebjerg Cemetery now have names. |
Anchor | Anders Straarup's next project is to investigate planes that crashed at sea. (Not everything that was said was 100% correct. AS.) |
