Den 28. april 1943 fløj
STI BF447 og 7 andre
Stirlings på mineringsopgaver i Østersøen i "Sweet Pea II", Kadetrenden, omkring
her, se kort.
"Udturen gik fint, og minerne blev kastet det rigtige sted. Da flyet passerede
den jyske østkyst i 6000-8000 fod blev de pludselig angrebet nedenfra fra en
JU88.
Bagbords vinge
brød i brand, og den inderste motor gik i stå. Piloten, P/O Denis James Brown,
forsøgte at undvige ved at dykke til ca. 2000 fod. Natjageren forsvandt,
men
flyet begyndte utilsigtet at flyve i cirkler samt tabe højde. P/O Brown gav
besætningen ordre til at forlade flyet, men det lykkedes kun for flymekanikeren, Sgt
Walter Lowery, og tårnskytten, W/O Leslie Turner. Flyet med de sidste
5 besætningsmedlemmer (P/O (Pilot) Denis J. Brown, Sgt (Navigator) Thomas Rich,
F/O (Wireless Operator)
John W. Scott, Sgt (Air Bomber) William T. Jones og Sgt
(Air Gunner) George Sutton ramte jorden og eksploderede.
Næste morgen fandt det danske politi en faldskærm
ved Kørup (omkring
her 2 km øst for nedstyrtningsstedet), og kort efter blev W/O Turner

Også Sgt Lowery blev anholdt og blev krigsfange i Tyskland. Det er en

On 28 April 1943
STI BF447 and 7 other Stirlings flew on minelaying
operations in the Baltic Sea in "Sweet Pea II", Kadetrenden, about
here, see map.
"The outward flight was fine, and the mines were dropped in the right place.
When the plane passed the east coast of Jutland at an altitude of 6,000 to 8,000
feet it
was suddenly attacked from
below by a JU88. The
port wing caught fire and the inner engine stopped. P/O (Pilot) Denis James
Brown tried to escape from the attack
by
diving to about 2,000 feet.
The night fighter disappeared, but unintendedly the plane started to fly in
circles and lose height. P/O Brown ordered the crew to bail out,
but only Sgt (Flight
Engineer) Walter Lowery and W/O (Top Turret Gunner) Leslie Turner managed
to get out. The plane crashed and exploded with the remaining
5 crew members
(P/O (Pilot) Denis J. Brown, Sgt (Navigator) Thomas Rich, F/O (Wireless
Operator) John W. Scott, Sgt (Air Bomber) William T. Jones and
Sgt (Air Gunner)
George Sutton.
Next morning the Danish police found a parachute
at Kørup (about
here 2 km east of the crash site) and W/O Turner was arrested shortly after."
