On its way to a mine laying operation in Kiel Bay on the night before 16 May, 1944, LAN LL963 was hit by flak and crashed into the sea at Avernakø.

Sergeant Douglas Frank Pegrum, United Kingdom, was the son of James Arthur Pegrum and Jessie Pegrum, of Maymyo, Burma.
He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 236, among more than 20,000 airmen who have no known grave. (Source: CWGC)
He is remembered on The Walls of Names at the International Bomber Command Centre, Phase 1, Panel 84.
